FOSSIL
Birregurra Commission
FOSSIL was commissioned for a newly built private residence in country Victoria, positioned to greet visitors as they enter the home while anchoring the expansive views beyond.
The concept emerged in response to both architecture and landscape. Suspended within the oversized window opening, the sculpture was designed to feel embedded within the structure rather than simply placed within it. This required close collaboration with the client and project team, including structural integration to support the suspended 400kg limestone monolith.
The images below trace the evolution of the work, from early sketches and visualisation through scale studies, material selection, carving, and final installation. The result is a piece that feels both grounded and quietly suspended — a sculptural counterpoint to the strength of the architecture and the geological history of the landscape beyond.
